Senior Picture Ideas

As one school year is coming to a close, it will be but a few short, fun and sun-filled weeks before the next begins.  For many, it will be their very last year of high school.  With that, they will be turning their thoughts to the future.  They will have to decide what course of study they will undertake and at what college.  It can be a very stressful year with all these decisions and study hours.  What needn’t be a stressful decision, though, is your senior pictures.  Fleur Foto Photography is here to ensure your high school senior portrait session is full of fun and stress-free!  When you choose Fleur Foto Photography for your high school senior photos, one of the very first things we do together is talk about senior picture ideas.

What do I wear for my Senior Picture?

The most common question I get asked when my seniors are planning their session is “what should I wear?”  There are so many clothing options available and it is important that your clothing choices reflect who you are and your personality.  I consult with all my clients before our sessions, not just the seniors, providing inspiration boards and examples of outfits that will look good in front of the camera.  You will most likely already have these items, or similar in your wardrobe, so don’t worry that you need to embark on a big shopping spree…..that is unless you were looking for an excuse to do just that.  🙂 There are some golden rules to follow, though:

  • Avoid logo clothing or clothing with writing on it.  You don’t want to wear anything that is going to instantly date you.  Can anyone say parachute pants?  And thinking of parachute pants, I know the 80s style is back in fashion, but neon colors should be something you choose NOT to feature in your senior pictures.
  • Choose an outfit that you LOVE and you LOVE WEARING!  It should be something you know is comfortable to wear and you feel comfortable wearing it.  You don’t want to spend your session itching and pulling at an ill-fitting outfit or wear something with scratchy material.  Your discomfort will show in your pictures and that’s the opposite of what we want!
  • Once you have your base outfit (or outfits – two or three in a session make for fantastic variety!), remember to style from head to toe – that means hats, scarves, jewelry, and shoes!  Layers are great and provide good visual interest.
  • Do you play a sport, or are a member of the high school band?  During our pre-shoot consultation, we will discuss this and can include sports items or musical instruments in the session.  What’s important is that these pictures reflect you right now – who you are and your interests.
  • Incorporate special items into your pictures.  For this Windham High School Senior, elephants had special meaning to her, so we made sure she incorporated her elephant necklace into her outfit.

Here are some Senior picture ideas for outfits for your session.  These outfits would work in all kinds of locations – at the apple orchard, in a field of wheat, or in an edgier urban environment.  Whatever the feel you want for your session, we will make it happen and will knock it out of the park!

Manchester NH Family Photos

I was absolutely thrilled when asked for family photos by these adorable guys!  I have known Sarah for a long time through us both being Child Passenger Safety Technicians and volunteering for my town’s local car seat clinics.  We also share a love of flying, although Sarah sadly didn’t complete her private pilot’s license.  We do love chatting about flying though and of course, car seats – yeah, we’re kind of geeky that way!

We had originally planned on my taking their portraits prior to the boys’ shared birthday party.  They both just turned 1 and 5.  Sadly the weather did not co-operate with us that day so we rescheduled and changed the location to Benson’s Park in Hudson.  This park is so versatile with lots of back-drop options and fun little nooks and crannies.

The family loved this shot and have chosen to feature it on a large metal print for their family room.  I can’t wait to see this hung!

The boys were just adorable and William is Mr. Personality!  What stories he could tell me!  We shared lots of secrets during our shoot, he told me poems and adventure stories.  Great things are in store for this little guy!

I love this shot because this is William.  Everything about this shot is him!  Perhaps there even is a modeling career in his future!

As you can see, it was a beautifully sunny morning when we met.  Spring was truly giving us a hint that at last it was coming to visit.  How gorgeous is baby Joseph?  I managed to steal some baby snuggles from him and he curled right into me.  Ahhh – so sweet!

William is full of energy too!  He had a great time running around the trees and playing peek-a-boo!

When we took these shots, Joseph was right on the cusp of walking himself.  In the short time between our shoot and presenting their images he is now off and walking!  I just love this intense look he is giving me here in the shot above.  That’s a mind that full of things just bursting to come out!

I love shots that really capture the moment and personality.  For me, family portraits should be a fun time for everyone.  We’ll get the compositions you are looking for, but when you just let things flow and happen, as you can see, you can also capture magic.  This is Sarah’s family frozen at this moment.  Not just how they look, but who they are.  That is the gift I wish to give my clients in their family portraits.

I love shooting families at all stages of their lives – be that they are just expecting and mom has a beautiful belly to showcase, they have young, energetic kids or their kids are a little older.  The latter was the case for this family that I had the pleasure of capturing last fall. Sometimes scheduling family portraits can be a bit tricky to get a time that works for everyone.  That only gets harder when the kids also have their own jobs.  We managed to get a date and time that would work for this wonderful family, though.  Shooting with natural light in the middle of the day can pose some difficulties for a photographer.  However, through skillful use of shade, shadow and my trusty reflector, we got busy to capturing some wonderful memories of this family.

The bond between this beautiful Argentinian mother and her graduating senior son is palpable.  You can tell not only is there immense love between them, there is also a lovely friendship and deep mutual respect.

The original remit was to have family portraits taken for use in holiday greeting cards – I was subsequebtly delighted to hear that their cards were a huge hit this year!  Once we began shooting, though, we were having entirely too much fun to call it quits after getting those card shots.

Yes, I had the boys climb a tree!  The family has jokingly called that shot their album cover!  Should you ever hear of a musical release from them, you are now in the know where the cover shot originated.  My, what handsome boys in this family!  I have no doubt they have a very active social life!

What can I say about these two?  Well, they have an adorable love story and they make this blended family work amazingly.  This was their first portrait session since their wedding which took place on a beautiful Jamaican beach.

Of course, there is a story behind the pointing – this is Luke and Avi’s “thing”.  They have a series of pictures over the years with them pointing to each other.  I was honored to be able to add to their series.  What a beautiful bond they have – intense brotherly and protective love.  Luke is off to college this year and about to embark on his college adventure.  I wish you all the best, Luke – great success, great fun and lots of life lessons!

It is heart-warming to see two people so clearly in love and completely besotted with each other.  You guys show us the rest just how to do it!

This was such a wonderful session and we had such a great time designing a portrait wall for their home and picking prints to frame.  I am looking forward to capturing more memories this summer with their extended family when they visit.  I can’t wait to work you again.  In the meantime, I’ll leave you with this image.  It says it all….

Nashua NH Family Portraits

Chance and luck are strange things.  For example, it was my great luck that I got to captures these Nashua NH family portraits when they took a chance on a raffle supporting breast cancer and won a photography session with me.  I’m not sure who the greatest winner was between us, but I’d hasten to say, I feel very lucky to now know this family and have had the pleasure to take their family portraits.  After dodging the New England weather and waiting for the snow to clear, we made a date and met at the lovely Benson’s Park in Hudson for some lake-front portraits.  I’ve shot many times at this location, but this was my first time taking it lake-front.  Wow!  What a great backdrop for this gorgeous family!

We had some fun, even though it was a chilly evening, and I chatted to Hadleigh about her ballet lessons.  As a former dancer myself, we had lots of barre talk we could share.

We made sure we got some shots of mom and dad on their own – apparently their first portraits since their wedding day.  I didn’t have to coax too hard to get them to look lovingly into each other’s eyes.  I also love to get the kids together – this pair has a great bond and no bribes were needed to get them to throw their arms around each other.

As I snapped away, Cohen and I chatted about his hockey lessons.  He is in a learn to skate program at the moment and loving every minute of it.  If you are a reader of my blog, you will already know that my family lives the hockey life.  I gave Jen and Josh some tips for surviving the future before them.

With dance recitals and hockey games in their future, I shared so many common interests and experiences with this family.  Not only did we click straight away, they are just a very cool family that is instantly likable.

It was my great pleasure to help Jen and Josh design a gallery wall for their home with their images from this family portrait session.  It’s going to make a big statement in their family room, showcasing an adorable family.

Hockey Lifestyle Photography Session | Londonderry NH Photographer

A large part of our family life is taken up by hockey. Hockey practices, hockey games, hockey scrimmages, and hockey equipment. My boys can’t get enough of it. If they’re not playing on the ice, they’re playing in our driveway. If the weather is too harsh for outside play, then they’re either watching it on TV or playing it on a video game. They collect hockey cards. Hockey is everywhere and we wouldn’t change a thing! Recently, my younger son and his Mite team took part in the Don Heyliger Memorial Tournament in Dover, NH. It was a weekend away for us and our fellow hockey families, and a chance for me to capture the event in a lifestyle photography session.

My boys love staying at hotels for the weekend. We don’t have to travel far afield, but if there’s a pool (and a TV), they are like pigs in mud.

Our team manager set us up in a great hotel in downtown Portsmouth – one of our favorite cities to visit. We managed to enjoy a little bit of the city in-between the trips to and from the Dover ice arena. I loved being able to stroll with my husband for a couple of blocks to the nearest Starbucks for our morning pick-me-ups.

My boys both play for the Southern NH Cavaliers. This is such a great organization. They are non-profit and really care about the kids and ensuring that the focus is on both skill development AND the enjoyment of the game.

Through hockey, my boys are learning some very valuable life lessons – much beyond the rules of a game and how to score a goal. I read a letter that was titled “A Father’s Wish” today shared by a fellow hockey mom on Facebook. I won’t reproduce the whole thing here, but I greatly empathized with the sentiment. Like most team sports, hockey is about respect – respect for your coach, your fellow players and the referee’s decisions. I loved the lines in the letter:

Teach him to play as a team and never to be selfish. Teach him never to blame his goaltender when a goal is scored against him, because five mistakes were made before the puck got to the goalie.

While the tensions run high on the ice during the tournament, our team knows how to keep the mood light and fun before the games. Boys and girls alike, they can let their hair down in the locker rooms.

Hockey teaches valuable lessons at a young age. We won’t win every game. Winning isn’t everything. It’s the goal, but sometimes we will lose. Sometimes those losses will be hard, especially for younger players. Learning that on the ice helps our players to deal with other losses they will face in life.

lifestyle photography session| Zamboni | Fleur Foto|hockey tournament

When we hear the Zamboni preparing the ice, the locker room gets a buzz. The kids get pumped and their smiles are wide. We happen to have a very good looking team too! These kids adore each other. When they are off the ice, they want nothing more than to spend more time with their teammates.

Coach Bob gets the kids to walk in an “orderly” line – I don’t think one of them will ever forget his “I can’t dance” by Genesis congo line!

lifestyle photography session| Shirt and tie | Fleur Foto|hockey tournament

What did I say about hockey, hockey, hockey? That’s right – if they’re not playing it on the ice, they’re playing it while they wait to get into the locker room!

lifestyle photography session| Taping hockey stick | Fleur Foto|hockey tournament

We are very fortunate to also have a number of assistant coaches on our team. They are all dads that wanted to get actively involved in the association and their kids’ sports education. We wouldn’t be without their help at practice and on the bench during the games. Thanks, Coach Dan, Coach Mike and Coach Matt for all your help and dedication this year!

Hockey means gear – a lot of it! And the gear has gear! There is a fine art to taping a stick – one that is learned early and practiced often.

Though we may dress smartly and look angelic, sometimes looks can be deceiving….

Soon it’s time to get down to business and get suited up. The first time as a parent that you put your kid’s hockey gear on, it can feel like you are doing a 1000 piece puzzle with no picture to follow. Soon enough, though, you and your hockey star learn exactly what goes where and in what order.

Coach Bob names a team captain for each game – it’s one of the many special touches he gives to his kids’ hockey experience. The kids are so thrilled to be leading their team for that game.

Right before they take the ice, Coach Bob goes over the plays he wants the kids to make. He reminds them where he wants them to place the puck in each scenario. The kids are transfixed, hanging on his every word. And they are not the only ones….

Soon it’s time to line up ready to take the ice. Sometimes, it’s necessary to get some last minute adjustments to your helmet from your older brother.

In hockey, some life-long friendships are made; by players and by parents. You become part of an extended family. A group that you can count on. They have your back as you have theirs.

lifestyle photography session| Hockey Buddies | Fleur Foto|hockey tournament

Sadly we’ll be saying goodbye to Coach Bob at the end of this season, our head coach. We’ve had the privilege to know him, and my boys have learned from his many years of experience and wisdom. Under his tutelage, my sons experienced their very first moments of hockey. He’s taught them so well with care, compassion and, when needed, a firm but fair hand. They don’t make that many Coach Bobs in this world. We were among the lucky ones to be able to call him our “Coach”.

Special thanks to Coach Bob – you have no idea how you will be missed or how much we would like to thank you for everything you have done for our team. If you find you have too much time on your hands, I know a group of young kids and their parents that would be only too happy to see you back on the ice with them.

As this season comes to a close and playoffs are looming, it’s with sadness I think of not seeing the same familiar faces two, three, four times a week. Have a fun summer my Cavs family. Enjoy your lazy afternoons and evenings. We will look forward to seeing you again in late August, and if you’re just as crazy as we are, we’ll see you around the rink this summer too!
