Boston Ballerina Project | Urban Ballet

Ever since my studio dancer portraits session from this Spring, I have been itching to take this concept outdoors for an urban ballerina project shoot. With the aid of my friend and fellow photographer, Enid, we headed down to the city for a hot Friday evening of shooting fun. We had two wonderful ballerinas from Ellens School of Dance, for whom the shoot would be.

Having lived in Boston’s North End, I knew exactly where I wanted to shoot and where we would get quiet alleys and roads.

When shooting in urban locations, it’s a good idea to keep things fluid. Unless you are shooting at sunrise when there is no one around the city, there are always going to be fun people and items to incorporate. This excellent saxophone player, J.C. Young, was thrilled to work with us not only for our shots.  He also provided some great background music for our work.

Likewise, when this bulldog’s owner was nearby, a quick chat secured a cool and out-of-the-box feature.

For those who follow me on Instagram and on my Facebook Page, you will have seen some of my sneak peeks from these sessions. The water fountain series were some of my favorite images from this evening. This ballerina agreed with me and purchased the above water fountain image in a 5×7 acrylic block. It looks fantastic!

I love the series of shots from this arbor in Christopher Columbus Park at the Boston Waterfront. Great leading lines and perspective!

There are so many great urban items to incorporate. As you can see from this trio above – ballerinas and hardscape – the soft and the hard – all make for great artistic contrast.

How amazing is Cecilia in this standing split? Yes, I wish I could do this, but sadly my standing split days are well over. I’ll leave that to the teens to whom I teach ballet instead.

As you can see from these featured images, I made sure that detail shots were also captured. I love this retirer derriere en pointe on the edge of the stone wall. Don’t fear mom, no ballerinas were harmed during this photo shoot.

Enid not only was a fantastic photographer assistant, she also took some cool behind the scenes shots. I always think these are fun to see and share.

We closed the evening and this outing of the Boston Ballerina Project in front of the Boston Old State House. This is iconic Boston with a new adornment. I’m sure you will agree this is an improvement to an already impressive facade.

Newborn Lifestyle Photography – Meet Baby A

I am thrilled to share with you a recent newborn lifestyle photography session. You may remember this amazing apple blossom maternity session and also the accompanying studio maternity session that this family booked with us. I was waiting with patient anticipation for the day when baby A was due to arrive.  I was indeed counting down the moments along with her family. My lovely clients, whom I now consider friends, sent me a photo from the hospital not long after her arrival. To say this little girl is absolutely beautiful would be an understatement. Following whoops of joy and exchanges of gushing, adoration and joy, we set the date for their newborn lifestyle photography session to be a few days following their home-coming.

I had discussed with my client previously their wishes for this session in our pre-session consultation, but I reconfirmed all the details and expectations, and provided details on how they should prepare for their session to help ensure the best results.  I arrived the morning of our session and we settled in together to create some magical images.  A newborn lifestyle photography session with Fleur Foto Photography is a relaxed affair.  I spend hours with my clients in the comfort of their own home and we let baby lead the way and dictate the flow of the session.  This means that there is no stress and no worries about time constraints for getting the shots.  Imagine it as friends hanging out with each other, having fun, except of them has a camera and is taking shots.

Lifestyle photography is all about telling a story, and with that, detail shots are important.  I began to document the beginning of baby A’s life in her new home.  Her nursery is absolutely adorable!  Erin and Brendan lovingly took hours decorating it (and Brendan’s hand was casualty of that process when he fell while painting her room.)  I adore the colors and the details.  Isn’t that tree mural amazing?

Without further ado, please meet the much anticipated Baby A!

What is it about the daddy-daughter relationship that is so special?  You can see the fierce love Brendan has for his new daughter.  Without a doubt, this will be one little lady that will grow up knowing nothing but the care and protection of her daddy.

Fleur Foto Photography Newborn Lifestyle Photography Session - Daddy-Daughter-Details

You can see just how new baby A was during our session – her cord was still attached.  It’s so easy to forget all these little details which is why a newborn session is such a great way to preserve this moment and memories.  I made sure to get all the little details.

A is such a great baby!  She gave us lots of sleeping time to capture her peacefully in her crib

And when she woke up, she wanted to nurse – Erin wanted to document her nursing relationship as part of the session.

Baby A is very lucky to have a couple of big sisters looking out for her – big sister Arianna, and family dog, Georgina.

As I said, newborn lifestyle photography sessions are relaxed affairs.

While baby A continued to sleep peacefully, I made sure to capture her tiny ears and tiny toes.

We also had fun posing baby A for a few less lifetsyle, more portrait, newborn shots.  And because little girls dream of being ballerinas, I give you baby A’s first ballerina photo.

Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | Bancroft Castle |Groton MA | Fleur Foto Photography

Groton MA Outlander Child Portraits

If you follow my Facebook Page, you’ll have already seen a sneak peak of these child portraits – the children in question being my own. I have wanted to blog this session for a while. So, I took a break from my client work for a short while to share these with you. I’m not sure how many of you have been watching the Starz series, Outlander. I absolutely love it not only because it features my homeland, but also because it is set during a period of Scottish history that I studied and love. I find the Jacobite Uprisings absolutely fascinating.  Anyway, if you haven’t already gotten hooked on Outlander, I highly recommend you check it out!

While watching the series, I was inspired to do an Outlander themed photo session with my boys. It was all quite simple really – they already had the kilts, the sporrans and the ghillie shirts. All I needed was a castle. Now, were we living in Scotland (or England it could be argued), all that would be required would be a quick trip in the car up the A82. My choice of castles would be awaiting.  However, we do not live in Scotland; we live in New Hampshire. Not one to let little details like that deter me, I performed an Internet search for New Hampshire Castles. I was already aware of Searles Castle, which is very close by in Windham, NH. My husband and I had considered it as our wedding venue. Searles wasn’t quite what I was looking for, though.

Next up for consideration was Winnekini Castle and I had pretty much settled on that. When mentioning my photo shoot plans in passing to my SOPHA friends just before a maternity studio shoot, they suggested Bancroft Castle in Groton, MA. This is just a small hike from Gibbet Hill Restaurant and well worth the trip.

Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | window | Bancroft Castle | Groton MA | Abandoned Castle | Fleur Foto Photography When we reached the top of the hill, I was delighted to see the ruins of the castle. While they are not quite like Scottish castle ruins, they were going to fit the bill nicely. My sons are well-versed in being photographer’s kids. With little direction and plenty of ideas for poses of their own, I started to capture some fantastic shots of them in this great location.
Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | Bancroft Castle | Groton MA | Fleur Foto Photography We belong to Clan Anderson – that comes from my grandmother on my father’s side. My mother is from Clan Melville. My brother was given Melville as a middle name, so he wears that tartan. I was given Anderson as a middle name, as were my sons, and thus we wear the Anderson tartan. The Anderson tartan is unique among all Scottish tartans in that it contains seven colors – all other Scottish tartans contain six or less. I happen to love it!
Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | Bagpipes | Bancroft Castle | Groton MA | Abandoned Castle | Fleur Foto Photography The boys had fun pretending that this had been their ancestral home and that they were the Laird’s children. I remembered what fun I had had as a child exploring lots of ruined castles in the Scottish countryside. It was nice to see my boys being able to do the same here. While my mind was on capturing great child portraits of them, their minds were on climbing and jumping and checking out the ruins.
Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | Abandoned Castle | Fleur Foto Photography The fireplace in what would have been the main hall was huge! As you can see, the boys could easily stand inside. You can also see where the second floor would be.
Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | Ruined Castle Window | Fleur Foto Photography My older son is quite the monkey and loves to climb – he got right up in this window and called down to me to take his photo – I happen to love this series of shots.
Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | Castle Ruins | Window Frame | Fleur Foto Photography On the inside of that same window, I captured these shots – it was quite high up in the air and I had to put aside my mummy anxiety and trust they would be ok.
Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | Castle Ruins | Window | Abandoned Castle | Bancroft's Castle | Fleur Foto Photography Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | Ghillie Shirt | Abandoned Castle | Fleur Foto Photography There are so many little nooks and crannies for great shots here – I could have shot in this location for ages. However, a setting sun, the arrival of the bugs, and two hungry boys all meant that we needed to bring things to a close soon.
Child Portraits | Outlander | Scottish Kilts | Bagpipes | Bancroft Castle | Groton MA | Abandoned Castle | Fleur Foto Photography Not before we had some fun with the bagpipes though! I mean, what Scottish themed photo shoot would be complete without them?

Maternity Studio Portraits | Londonderry NH

I am always excited to share with you my recent work, and especially so with these maternity studio portraits.  I am sure you instantly recognize Erin from her on-location maternity session we recently shot at Mack’s Apples in Londonderry.  This time however, Erin wanted to do something a little different and go in the studio.  For this shoot, I suggested a white lace dress that I have in my maternity wardrobe for my clients.  At first, Erin was a little unsure, but she trusted my direction.  When I showed her the back of my camera from our first shot, she immediately relaxed and put herself in my hands.

If you were to ask Erin about our session, she may describe how I hopped around in glee as each shot was taken.  The vision I had for each shot came together and my excitement levels kept rising (nothing to do with my Starbucks I had downed before the session – I promise!)

The studio I use – The Studio of Photographic Arts, has many different back-drop options available for use, which means we can create a whole host of varied images.

Erin and Brendan’s bedroom walls are green, so we decided that some green back-drop shots would work well for display in that room.

There’s even a cool metal backdrop for an edgier look.

There were so many fabulous maternity studio shots to choose from to share from this session, it was hard to decide which to feature.  Of course, my subject has got to be one of the most beautiful women I have photographed.  Not only is she beautiful on the outside, but she is equally, if not more, beautiful on the inside too.  I feel very lucky to be photographing her at this stage of her life and to capture her amazing family as it goes from three, to four.

Erin was up for anything in the studio – we created this cool image with her reflection on the wooden floor.  Can you see it?

I knew that the photo reveal session for these maternity studio portraits was going to be really special.  For a taste of what your session with Fleur Foto Photography would be like, check out my Facebook Page to see the movie created from these images.

It’s so hard to choose a favourite image from this session.  I am torn between the one above using the wooden wall back-drop and the following one.  What do you think is the best?

Things to do | Londonderry, NH | Lifestyle Photography

Summer school vacation is days away which may mean that you are thinking of things to do with your family around Londonderry. I thought I would help you guys out with your planning by featuring some of the spots my family enjoys during the warmer weather and lazy days. First up, Mel’s Funway Park in Litchfield, the next town over from Londonderry.

Things to do | Londonderry | Mel's Funway | mini-golf | Fleur Foto Photography

Towards the end of each school year, Londonderry North School PTA organizes a Mother/Son outing at Mel’s which is a great afternoon/evening event. We get the fun pack of tickets which gives us the opportunity to try all of the attractions there. Boy are there a lot of attractions – we usually don’t get through all of them in one evening, which necessitates at least one other visit. My family doesn’t complain!

Things to Do | Londonderry | Batting cages | Fleur Foto Photograpy

First up on the agenda is usually the batting cages. Now, neither of my boys play on a baseball team, but they LOVE the batting cages. There’s a funny story about that actually which stems from my complete and utter British ignorance of baseball. The first year we attended this PTA event, it was just me and my older son. It was both his and my first time at the batting cages. We exchanged our ticket for tokens and a bat and headed to the cages. We were thrilled that the first cage we got to had no waiting line. He put on his helmet, hopped in and deposited his tokens. He was immediately bombarded by what could only be accurately described as bullet-speed baseballs. To his credit, I do recall he managed to hit a couple of them. It was only the NEXT time we visited the park that I noticed that this was the 85 mph cage and the big warning sign on the cage door. Yup – parenting fail right there!

Things to do | Londonderry | Batting Cages Helmets | Fleur Foto Photography

This is my younger son (superman) and his buddy from school. My boys really want to spend this time with their school friends more than hang out with their mother, but I still have a great time taking them here to this event.

Things to do | Londonderry | Arcade Mel's Funway Park | Fleur Foto Photography

My boys are just like all the others and they love playing arcade games. Mel’s has a number of games available to play – everything from Skee Ball in the back to driving games. I got a kick out of the snowmobile game that blew wind in your face as you played! Notice the wind swept look my son is sporting.

Things to do | Londonderry | Go Karts | Fleur Foto Photography

From the arcade, it was off to the Go-Kart track. Now, I don’t mean to brag, but I am a mean go-kart driver! I think I gave some of the dads on the course a surprise and a run for their money. Above is my husband and older son leading the pack in their race.

Things to do | Londonderry | Driving Range Mel's Funway Park | Fleur Foto Photography

Around the corner from the restaurant – The Funway Burger – is the driving range. My boys never play golf, but they made some pretty good swings and hits this evening. I am not sure their technique was quite right, but it’s all good fun!

Things to do | Londonderry | Spooky World Hearse | Laser Tag | Mel's Funway Park | Fleur Foto Photography

Across the parking lot, past the Spooky World hearse (Mel’s is the location for Spooky World in September), is the laser building which houses laser tag and a laser maze. The kids get 10 mins in the tag arena and come out with huge smiles and bragging about their high scores.

Things to Do | Londonderry | Mini-golf Mel's Funway Park | Fleur Foto Photography

The final treat of the evening is mini-golf. There are two courses available which snake through some pretty water features and gardens. This mom got three holes-in-one on this visit – a personal best, but I won’t be giving up my day job for golf any time soon! You’ll see my handsome husband above – we made this visit a family affair and not just a Mother/Son treat. This worked well, allowing us to give some one-on-one attention and time with each of our sons.

Once you’ve exhausted yourself and all your fun-pack tickets, what better way to end the visit than a huge ice-cream sundae? Mel’s features Gifford’s Ice-Cream and it’s a delicious treat which elicits smiles from every patron.
